Ten Minute Tuesday: Penny Lyons-Johnston

Penny Lyons-Johnston has been in the travel industry for almost 30 years!  Her first role was as a Travel Consultant when she was 18 years old and never looked back!  Ending her ‘career’ as a Store Manager (Retail Travel) in 2019, she thought she was done booking travel for anyone but herself and family.  But she was wrong!  Once you get the travel bug ~ it never leaves!

Now Penny is part of two businesses both near and dear to her heart!  Her Health and Wellness business aligns perfectly with her passion to use safe, result driven products from the inside ~ out!  Plus she is also your go to person for all things Disney, Universal, Cruising and Grand Sirenis Resorts.

Married to her highschool sweetheart for 29 years,  a Mom to our daughter (26) and son (22) plus 2 Golden Retrievers and now, a fur grand-baby, a sweet GoldenDoodle.  When she’s not working on her businesses, you can find her traveling, at our cottage in Muskoka or spending time in the garden.

I think it comes with maturity, you finally realize, we get one life.  Live it on your terms!

Morning Routine

What morning routine?!  I’m a hot mess most days!  Jumping from one thing to the next, I never sit still!  I do manage to get at least my first litre of water in for the day as soon as I wake up!

Best Productivity Hack

My biggest hack is planning!  Although I can be a hot mess, I am actually very organized and plan things out.  Every Sunday I set the menu for the week and shop for it and prep where I can.  Second Hack ~ Make a list!  I am notorious for having multiple lists on the go!  My husband jokes, I need a list for all my lists! What gets on the list ~ gets done!

What’s Something You Want for Your Kids (That You Didn’t Always Experience)?

Since our kids are now adults, I’d like to think some of their fondest memories are travelling together as a family.   I was given the gift of travel,  but definitely wanted more!    My first ‘big’ trip was when I was 16 and my parents took me to Cuba.  I knew then,  that travel is education, and I always strived to take our children to many places as possible ~ and still do!

What Has Been Your Biggest Failure (Turned Lesson)?

Having the mindset that I need to please everyone else and not myself.  I would make decisions for myself based on what I thought others wanted me to do.  I think it comes with maturity, you finally realize, we get one life.  Live it on your terms!

What’s Something You Do That Other People Might Think Is Weird?

When I was 37 years old I was diagnosed and treated for Necrotizing Fasciitis and celebrated (yes celebrated!) my 38th birthday in the ICU with my family.  I look back on that season of my life with immense gratitude.  It changed my entire perspective on life.   Without it, I don’t think I would have taken the risks I did later ~ like ‘retire’ at 47 years old!

What’s One Thing You Would Never Change About Yourself?

I would never change getting sick with NF.   As horrific and painful as it was, it changed my trajectory and that of my family.   It brought us closer and made us see what is truly important in life.

What’s One Thing That Has Felt Like a Win as a Mom?

Our kids are both happy and thriving and that is all any Mom wants.   Our daughter was diagnosed with a learning disability in Jr Kindergarten.  I am proud to say she is a successful adult and earned her highschool diploma!  My hubby and I were also awarded the ‘Biggest Advocates’ plaque for always being there to support her in every way we could.

Our son is following his dreams and is never afraid to take chances!  During Covid he realized what he was studying wasn’t for him.  Rather than being like I used to be, and sticking with it because that is ‘what he should do’, he spoke up and made a huge change and is loving what he does now!  Plus, he is never afraid to travel on his own!  I love that he takes after me in that way!

Ten Minute Tip

Figure out what sets your heart on fire and follow your dreams ~ not someone else’s!  Put your oxygen mask on first when it comes to your health and wellness, and inspire others to do the same.  And never say no to your next adventure!
